Getting started
What is metcha?
metcha turns a single pair of earbuds into a shared, two-way translator between two people. One person keeps an earbud, the other takes the second earbud, and each hears the conversation in their own language — live.
Do I need an account?
No. metcha doesn't require sign-up. Open the app, pick two languages, and start.
Does it work without internet?
The default translation path uses Apple's on-device translation framework, which works offline once you've downloaded the relevant language pack on your iPhone. Speech-to-text streams to a cloud service, so a basic connection is needed for the live transcription. Premium voices and "Better Translation" (metcha Plus) require a working connection.
Earbuds and audio
Which earbuds work with metcha?
metcha is hardware-agnostic. Most major earbud brands work, including AirPods (all generations), Beats Fit Pro, Sony, Bose, Samsung Galaxy Buds, and most Bluetooth earbuds compatible with iOS. If your earbuds connect to your iPhone, they'll work with metcha.
Do both people need their own earbuds?
No — that's the point. Share one pair: one earbud each. If you'd rather both wear your own earbuds, the optional pairing flow on the home page lets a guest's phone join in the browser by scanning a QR code; both phones then use their own earbuds.
I can't hear the translation in one earbud.
Open the app's settings and check "Ear assignment." metcha plays each language to a specific earbud (left or right); swapping the assignment usually fixes the issue. Also confirm both earbuds are connected and not in transparency-only mode.
Languages and translation
Which languages does metcha support?
metcha supports the languages that Apple's on-device translation framework supports for free use, plus an expanded set of voices and translations through metcha Plus. The current list is shown in the app when you pick a language pair.
The translation isn't quite right. Can I fix it?
Long-press the line in the live transcript to see the source text. metcha Plus subscribers can re-translate a single line with a higher-quality model from the same long-press menu.
Can I use metcha for medical, legal, or emergency communication?
We don't recommend it. Translation models — even very good ones — make mistakes that matter most in high-stakes settings. For medical, legal, or emergency situations please use a qualified human interpreter.
metcha Plus & subscriptions
What does metcha Plus include?
Premium cloud voices with accent matching, voice cloning, more natural translation in the live conversation and the iMessage extension (with a graceful fallback when the network isn't healthy), and per-line enhanced re-translation. See the pricing page for details.
How do I cancel?
On your iPhone, open Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → metcha and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep access until then.
How do I restore a purchase on a new device?
Sign in to the new device with the same Apple ID, install metcha, and open Settings → metcha Plus. Tap Restore purchases. Your active subscription will be detected and re-applied.
Can I get a refund?
App Store purchases are refunded by Apple, not by us. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and request a refund for metcha. EU and UK consumers retain their statutory rights where applicable.
Voice cloning
How does voice cloning work?
You record a short voice sample inside metcha. The sample is uploaded to a third-party voice-cloning provider, which generates a model of your voice. The sample audio is removed from your device once the clone exists; the resulting clone identifier is stored locally so the app can route premium translations through your voice. The specific provider is named on the consent screen in the app before you record.
How do I delete my voice clone?
Open Settings → Voices → Your clone → Delete. We'll delete the clone at the provider as well. Once deleted, it cannot be recovered.
Can I clone someone else's voice?
Only with their explicit consent. Cloning a third party's voice without their knowing consent is prohibited under our Terms and may also violate the law where you live.
Privacy and data
Are my conversations stored?
Live audio is processed in memory and discarded after transcription. Transcripts are kept on your device only — we do not store them on our servers. You can delete any transcript or clear your full history from inside the app.
Where can I read your full privacy policy?
The full policy is at metcha.io/privacy.
